Robbers gun down MoFA officer in Kumasi

In yet another bloody attack in the Ashanti Region, suspected armed robbers on Tuesday evening shot dead a 41-year-old man at his residence at Abuontem New Site, near Aputuogya in the Bosomtwe District.

 Joseph Baah Tweneboah, the Metropolitan Crop Officer of the Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MoFA), was shot at point blank range killing him instantly. 

The incident is the third in about two months in which armed robbers had attacked and killed their victims in Kumasi and its surrounding communities.

Chief Justice is not on leave- Judicial Secretary

The Judiciary has denied reports the Chief Justice Georgina Theodora Wood is on leave.

In a response to a letter written by Member of Parliament for Effutu  Alexander Afenyo Markin, the Judicial Secretary Alex B. Opoku Acheampong said the Chief Justice is out of the country on official duties and the senior most judge on the Supreme Court, William Atuguba is acting in her stead.

 Messi and his father Jorge, who manages his financial affairs, are accused of defrauding Spain of more than €4m (£3m; $4.5m) between 2007 and 2009. The authorities allege that the two used tax havens in Belize and Uruguay to conceal earnings from image rights. Spain’s tax agency is demanding heavy fines and prison sentences.

Barclays Bank Ghana has hailed the arrest of the confidence trickster who was caught on CCT camera duping a school boy in the Bank’s Osu branch. 

Citi Business News sources in the Police service say the suspect is currently in custody in Ashaiman but will be transferred to the Osu Police station for investigations on the Barclays Bank incident. According to initial reports, the suspect was attempting to dupe another person in another bank when one of the customers recognized him from the CCTV footage which went viral after citifmonline.com published it.

6 dead after boat capsizes on River Volta

Six children drowned on River Volta on Sunday when a boat carrying them capsized.

Some eyewitnesses said the incident happened when the boat which was from Nantwekope and heading towards Yeji hit a tree stump and in the process capsized.

Consumers owe us GHc1.6 billion – ECG

The government, private institutions and individuals owe the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) about GH¢1.6 billion in electricity bills as of 2014. 

The acting Director of Finance of the ECG, Mr Frank Anokwafo, told the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) last Thursday that the government owed GH¢950 million as a result of subsidies and non-payment of electricity bills, while private institutions and individuals owed GH¢610 million. Mr Anokwafo and the other directors of the ECG were answering queries raised in the 2012, 2013 and 2014 Auditor General’s reports at the PAC sitting in Accra.

The British High Commissioner to Ghana, Jon Benjamin has denied reports that  the Central Regional Chairman of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC), Allotey Jacobs has been arrested in the UK. Reports of Allotey Jacobs busted at the Heathrow Airport on Sunday by the UK National Crime Agency on suspected money laundering and cocaine trafficking went viral on social media.
